A note from Chuck

Why we started a club

We are a small kitchen. Almost everything we make goes out in small batches, and the things I am proudest of tend to be gone before most people ever hear about them.

The club is my fix for that. Once a month I put together a box of what we are actually making right now, including things that do not always make it onto the website, and it goes to members first.

I do it together with John Kelly Chocolates in Los Angeles. They make truffle fudge better than anyone I know, and their work does something ours does not. Putting the two kitchens in one box is the part I enjoy most.

It comes to around $90 of chocolate. Members pay $79, shipping included, and you can pause any month you like.

What arrives

About $90 of chocolate, for $79

Every box is built around what is coming out of the two kitchens that month, so the contents rotate. A typical box includes all five of these.

  • 01
A signature assortmentThe piece by piece collection we are best known for, chosen for the season. Caramels, ganaches, and whatever the fruit that month justifies.
  • 02
Artisan barsHandmade bars from our bar line, built on chocolate we choose by percentage and origin rather than by price.
  • 03
John Kelly truffle fudgeMade in Los Angeles. Denser than a truffle, softer than a fudge, and the thing people write to us about most.
  • 04
Chocolate covered nuts and fruitToasted nuts and dried fruit under a proper coat of chocolate. The part of the box that disappears first.
  • 05
Early access to new releasesWhen we have something new, members get it before it goes on sale to everyone else.

Two kitchens

The reason no two boxes feel alike

Most chocolate subscriptions send you one house style twelve times a year. This one sends two, and they are good at opposite things.

San Francisco

Charles Chocolates

Refined caramels, elegant assortments, and balanced bars. Our side of the box is the restrained one: less sugar, more chocolate, and a lot of attention paid to texture.

What you will notice: the snap on the bars and the way the caramels stay soft without going sticky.

Los Angeles

John Kelly Chocolates

Truffle fudge and deeply indulgent confections with a luxuriously smooth texture. Their side of the box is the rich one, and it is the reason members stay.

What you will notice: the fudge melts at body temperature. Most fudge does not.

Before you decide

The parts people ask about first

You are not locked in

Pause, skip a month, or cancel from your account in about ten seconds. Nothing to email, nobody to convince.

It arrives in good shape

We pack for the weather, and we watch the forecast in summer. If a box turns up damaged or melted, get in touch and we will make it right.

The price is the price

$79 a box, or $72 on the annual plan. Shipping is included in both. There is no setup fee and no separate handling charge.

Gifting

A gift that shows up twelve times

The problem with a nice box of chocolate is that it is finished by Sunday. A year of the club is the same gesture, stretched across twelve months, and it costs less per box than buying the boxes one at a time.

It works particularly well for parents, clients, the person who already owns everything, and anyone you are thanking for something real.

Questions

Everything else

Can I cancel, or is this one of those?

You can cancel from your account at any time, and it takes about ten seconds. You can also pause, skip a single month, or move to a less frequent plan instead of leaving. There is no minimum number of boxes on the monthly plan.

Will I get the same things over and over?

No. The box is built around what the two kitchens are making that month, so the assortment rotates through the year. The five categories stay consistent (an assortment, bars, truffle fudge, covered nuts and fruit, and something new), but what fills them changes.

Why only California, Oregon and Washington?

Chocolate does not travel well, and ground shipping from San Francisco reaches those three states fast enough that the box arrives the way we packed it. We would rather ship to fewer states well than to every state badly. More states are coming.

What about summer? Does it melt?

We watch the forecast and pack accordingly, and ground transit within the West Coast is short. If a box does arrive in poor shape, get in touch and we will make it right.

I have a nut allergy. Can you customize the box?

We cannot. Every member gets the same curated assortment, so club boxes cannot be adjusted for allergies or dietary restrictions. Our products may contain or come into contact with nuts, dairy, soy, sesame and wheat. If that is a problem, order individual items from the shop instead, where you can read each product's ingredients.

When am I charged, and when does the box ship?

Boxes go out at the beginning of each month. The monthly plan bills each month on your signup date, and you will always be able to see and change your next charge from your account. The twelve month plan bills once, at $864, and then nothing again for a year.

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes, and the twelve month plan is the cleanest way to do it: one payment, twelve deliveries, no renewal for the recipient to think about. Enter their address as the shipping address at checkout.

Is $79 actually a good deal?

The contents come to about $90 at retail, and ground shipping is included, which is normally $10 or more on a box this size. On the twelve month plan you are paying $72 for the same box. We are not trying to be the cheapest chocolate subscription. We are trying to be the one you do not cancel.

Start with one box. Decide after that.

Around $90 of chocolate from two of California's best kitchens, for $79 with free ground shipping. If it is not for you, cancel before the next one.
